SME’s Greater Charleston Chapter 430 strives to be the best it can be within SME and within its local community. It’s been challenging to continue to be at the platinum level (for the fourth year in a row); however, the chapter is fortunate to have committed chapter officers and members who support its overall mission and vision. Chapter 430’s Mission To acquire and distribute quality manufacturing knowledge among its members as well as the broader community resulting in increased interest and improved manufacturing skill base in the area. We also desire to support our Charleston area youth in their knowledge and awareness of manufacturing as a viable career ...

The FELIX Laboratory and the High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML) have recently conducted the first measurements that combine a free electron laser (FEL) with a powerful magnet. The combination enables researchers to explore the electronic properties of materials. It provides a way to perform terahertz (THz) magneto spectroscopy on samples. https://semiengineering.com/manufacturing-bits-sept-5/ #Lasers

While additive manufacturing provides many benefits, there can be high variability and increased risk of defects with 3D printed parts. As more industries are relying on this technology, ensuring quality in finished products will be crucial to winning the trust of consumers. Accurate inspection is therefore key to maintaining acceptable dimensional tolerances and identifying defects like porosity. Industrial computed tomography is the optimal inspection method for inspecting and validating both external and internal features of 3D printed parts. Industrial CT is a nondestructive and non-contact imaging technology that provides quick inspection time and handles ...

DEARBORN, MI – Jul 28, 2017 – Identifying and isolating parts that fail to meet stringent quality standards shouldn’t be an uncertain process. Part sorting with digital radiography provides definitive results, takes less time than traditional testing, and can reveal internal defects nondestructively. With this method, manufacturers can quickly identify and remove suspect parts from a lot and reintroduce quality parts back into production. Third party inspection labs are an effective option for part sorting when in-house testing proves unsuccessful or when manufacturers simply do not have the time nor resources to conduct proper testing. These labs provide a ...

I'm happy to announce that General Motors and SME are working with Michael Grieves (Florida Institute of Technology) to develop a web-based evaluation system to aid manufacturers in making better decisions in additive manufacturing, also known and 3D printing. This partnership of companies makes up the Independent Technical Evaluation of Additive Manufacturing (ITEAM), which will provide manufacturers with an expert system that compares and calculates the best machine, material and process for a particular application. The system also offers an additive manufacturing community section, where users can share experiences and feedback on equipment, materials ...

SME Members, Yesterday, Apple announced some really exciting news related to the manufacturing industry. They’re planning a $1 billion fund to support advanced manufacturing jobs in the U.S. (read a CNN article here ). As this aligns so closely to our vision, mission and purpose, as well as our strategic priorities, it only makes sense for us to applaud and thank Apple. I posted an article on LinkedIn yesterday, with an open letter to Apple. You can find the letter here . Given this is so important to us and to the manufacturing industry, I encourage you to take a look at my letter – and then like it and share it across your own social media platforms. ...

Parts and components fail for a number of reasons, including flaws in design, manufacturing defects, and normal wear. Determining the root cause of failure can pose a challenge for manufacturers, often requiring extensive testing and collection of data. Industrial CT scanning is a radiographic testing method that can inspect the internal features of parts in 3D, offering many advantages over other methods for conducting failure investigations. Third party inspection labs assist manufacturers by providing consistent and unbiased data for failed parts. The insight they gain helps them quickly develop corrective actions, saving costs associated with recalls ...
